Be A Real Magical Girl with this New Sailor Moon Makeup

Published on

When Naoko Takeuchi first wrote the line “Moon Prism Power, Make-Up!”, I’m sure she wasn’t intending for it to be taken literally. Not that there’s anything wrong with it actually happening.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sailor Moon anime, Japanese toy manufacturer Bandai has been gradually releasing replicas of props seen in the show over the past year. Such replicas include tangible versions of the Cutie Moon Rod and Luna Pen, as well as makeup disguised as some of the wands and amulets used by the Scouts in their quest against the Negaverse.

Usagi isn’t called Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon for nothing, it turns out. One of the more exciting products released last year was the Miracle Romance Shining Moon Powder: a compact shaped like Sailor Moon’s first transformation brooch filled with a finishing powder. Unfortunately, like many of the items sold in the 20th Anniversary line, it was a limited edition item and sold out quickly.

Other recently-discontinued items include a nail polish set shaped like the Inner Senshi’s Star Transformation Wands from Sailor Moon R and a lip balm in the form of Sailor Moon’s Moon Stick with a miniature version of the Silver Imperium Crystal.

Currently available are a few items sure to help turn any fan into a fabulous warrior of the Moon Kingdom. A nail art set complete with six different designs featuring the Senshi is on sale for $104. The designs range from more modernist expressions of the Senshi’s insignia to portraits of each Senshi. Since we all missed the powder compact, Bandai released a pocket mirror with hidden storage in the shape of both Sailor Moon’s original Transformation Brooch and Cosmic Heart Compact. Each compact also contains a plastic replica of the Silver Imperium Crystal, so be sure to keep it away from any Negaverse villains!

The future -- thankfully, coming sooner than 30th Century Crystal Tokyo -- brings a lot of exciting new products. The first is a pair of tinted lip balms shaped like Sailors Uranus and Neptune’s transformation wands. One can apply these to accentuate your pout created by the original dub’s erasure of their romantic relationship, since apparently America wasn’t ready for lesbians in anime in the 1990’s. For the girls looking for something different with their eyeliner, the Miracle Romance Star Power Prism Liner comes in both green and orange liquid liners. It’s enough to make Sailors Jupiter and Venus jealous of your cat eye.

Unfortunately, as these items are both expensive and limited edition, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to buy some for a test run. It is exciting, though, knowing that there are fans across the globe out there looking as beautiful as the Moon Princess. As we get closer and closer to the release of Sailor Moon Crystal, it’s expected that more items will be released through Bandai. I’ll just have to sit and wait -- unless Queen Beryl gets to me first, that is.
